Every server web hosting server plan includes free data backup service for emergency protection. This protection is designed to get you back online quickly if there is a hardware crash and to prevent a catastrophic loss of data. We understand individual backup routines are difficult to make, so we are here for you.
For utmost protection from data loss, follow this recipe:
- Raid 1 or Raid 10 storage – CHECK!
- Free Backup Service of critical hosting files – CHECK!
- Offline backup set of files on your local computer or home/office network?
If you don’t have your own copy of your own files, you are at slight risk of data loss. Create a back plan now! Using your FTP client, you can download a fresh copy of your site. Need your database backed up? YES! Don’t forget your database for your web site. Use your server’s admin control panel to create your backup, and store it on your computer.
Our web hosting service provides you with a free weekly backup service. Once per week, our backup server will update its repository of your site’s files, databases, and server configs. We collect enough information to restore your service to a working state in the event of massive data loss due to drive failure.
Every single dedicated web hosting plan is also provisioned on either RAID 1 or RAID 10 drive systems that are also designed to prevent data loss. Combined with the free data backup service, you can feel assured that your data is protected to the best of our capability.
Please understand that we cannot be liable for loss of data, it is the client’s responsibility to ensure they have a complete backup set of their site at all times. We recommend a weekly or bi-monthly habit to backup your data.
The backup service is not designed to protect you from accidental data loss or overwriting a file with a new version. Example. Let’s say the backup server updated it’s copy of your index.php file on Sunday. Then, on Monday, you accidentally overwrote your copy. If you don’t have your own copy, you simply notify support and we will restore our latest copy for you.
Now, a bad example and perfect reason why you should have your own copy. Let’s say you overwrote your index.php file on Saturday and didn’t realize it. When the backup service runs on Sunday, it will see a newer version of your index.php file and update it’s copy. Your old file is gone and cannot be retrieved!
We always recommend creating or updating your backup set before doing any major work to avoid mistakes like this. Great practice to get into to keep your server’s files safe.
We do not archive backup files within your user directories, such as tar.gz files, or log files, and staging directories for encoding files. These files are generally not for live web site usage and therefore are not critical for the emergency restore service.
Absolutely. We can provide dedicated drives on our backup systems for your server. This would give you two backup sets of your data. Your paid service can also omit our exclusion and backup everything if you wish. You may also find a dual server system as an ideal solution as well. If both servers have the capacity to hold each other, you can have server A backup server B. We can schedule and configure any custom combinations for you.
